How to play Word Guess
Word Guess is a Wordle-style puzzle: find the hidden five-letter word in six tries. After each guess the tiles change colour to show which letters are right, which are in the wrong place and which are not in the word at all.
Rules
Type any five-letter word and press Enter. A green tile means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different spot. Grey means the letter is not in the word. Each letter of the answer is matched only once, so a guess with two Es shows only as many coloured Es as the answer contains. Solve faster for more points: 600 for the first try down to 100 on the sixth.
Controls
- Keyboard: type letters, Backspace deletes, Enter submits.
- On-screen keyboard: tap the letters, ⌫ and Enter; keys change colour as you learn about them.
- New Game picks a new word and keeps your running score.
Solving tips
- Open with a word that has several common letters and two vowels, for example CRANE or SLATE.
- Use your second guess to test new letters rather than repeating confirmed ones.
- Keep green letters in place and move yellow letters to new positions.
- Remember that letters can repeat in the answer.
History
Software engineer Josh Wardle released Wordle in October 2021, and its daily five-letter puzzle became a worldwide habit within months. The New York Times bought it in January 2022. Word Guess follows the same green, yellow and grey rules.

- How many guesses do I get? Six. If you have not found the word after the sixth guess, the answer is revealed.
- How does scoring work? A correct answer adds (7 − number of guesses) × 100 points, and your best total is saved in this browser.
- Can I play on my phone? Yes. Use the on-screen keyboard under the grid.
