Developer Log: Designing Neon Deck-Hacker
Neon Deck-Hacker is our love letter to the roguelike deck-builder genre, blending the strategic depth of card games with the gritty, neon-drenched aesthetics of cyberpunk hacking. Developing a fully functional card game entirely in vanilla JavaScript and HTML/CSS was a monumental task, requiring us to build our own lightweight state-management system and UI renderer from scratch.
The Mechanics of Intrusion: RAM, CPU, and Trace
The core gameplay loop revolves around three primary resources: RAM, CPU, and Trace. RAM dictates how many programs (cards) you can execute in a single turn. It forces the player to make agonizing choices: Do I spend my last RAM unit to deploy a Firewall, or do I execute a risky attack to destroy the Corporate ICE before it strikes back? CPU represents your health; if it drops to zero, your session is forcefully disconnected.
The most unique mechanic in Neon Deck-Hacker is the Trace Level. Inspired by classic cyberpunk lore, powerful attacks aren't just expensive in RAM—they also alert the system administrator. As your Trace Level climbs toward 100%, the enemy ICE becomes exponentially more dangerous, eventually dealing double damage. This forces players to draft Utility cards to manage their Heat, creating a dynamic tug-of-war between aggressive hacking and stealthy manipulation.
Procedural Network Topology
No two hacking runs are exactly the same. The Network Topology map is procedurally generated at the start of every session using a custom node-routing algorithm. The game randomly determines the pathways, the types of encounters (Standard ICE vs. Elite ICE), and the location of the final SysAdmin boss. This ensures that the roguelike element remains fresh, encouraging players to adapt their drafting strategy based on the upcoming nodes.
Advanced Tactics and Deck Synergy
To survive the deeper layers of the network, you must understand card synergy. A deck bloated with low-impact attacks will inevitably stall out against elite enemies. Here are a few advanced strategies:
- The Burst Protocol: Combine cards that grant extra RAM with high-cost "Finisher" cards to bypass an enemy's shield entirely in one turn.
- The Ghost Run: Focus heavily on Defense and Utility. Let the enemy waste their attacks on your impenetrable Firewall while you slowly whittle them down with low-Trace attacks.
- Drafting Discipline: You do not have to take a card at every Reward Node. Sometimes, keeping your deck lean and efficient is better than diluting your card pool with mediocre programs.
