Developer Log: Cooking Up Moonlight Diner

Moonlight Diner: Last Service is a fast-paced time management game with a strong narrative focus. We wanted to combine the chaotic cooking gameplay of titles like Diner Dash with the moody, supernatural storytelling of a late-night highway diner.

The Chaos Curve

Pacing is everything in a time management game. We designed a 'Chaos Director' algorithm that monitors the player's performance. If the player is handling orders flawlessly, the system spawns demanding supernatural patrons to increase the pressure. If the player is struggling, it provides a brief lull to let them catch up.

Narrative Integration

Between shifts, players engage in branching dialogue with the diner's mysterious patrons. We built a lightweight dialogue tree system using JSON, allowing us to easily write and integrate complex conversation branches that react to the player's cooking performance.
