Developer Log: Cultivating Metro Bloom
Metro Bloom explores a post-apocalyptic setting where nature reclaims an abandoned subway system. It blends elements of city-building, gardening, and resource management into a unique, subterranean experience.
Simulating the Ecosystem
The core of Metro Bloom is its interconnected resource simulation. Water from surface leaks must be routed to filtration tanks, which then feed the hydroponic fungal farms. We wrote a custom cellular automata system to handle the flow of water and the gradual spreading of moss and roots across the subway tiles.
Atmosphere and Lighting
To sell the claustrophobic yet beautiful atmosphere of an underground greenhouse, we implemented a dynamic 2D lighting engine. Bioluminescent mushrooms and jury-rigged neon signs cast colored light across the tiles, creating a stark contrast with the deep shadows of the abandoned tunnels.
