Developer Log: The Making of Astrominer: Deep Core
Astrominer: Deep Core was born from our fascination with resource-management rogue-lites. The goal was to create a compelling gameplay loop: descend, mine, survive, and upgrade. We built a custom procedural generation algorithm that creates the underground biomes dynamically as the player drills deeper.
The Mechanics of the Deep
The core tension in Astrominer comes from managing Fuel and Hull Heat. Every block mined consumes fuel, and descending into the magma layers dramatically increases the heat of your mech. Players must constantly weigh the risk of pushing deeper for valuable Nova Crystals against the very real danger of running out of fuel and losing their cargo.
Technical Details
We relied heavily on the HTML5 Canvas API for rendering the grid-based underground. To ensure stable 60 FPS even when thousands of blocks are on screen, we implemented spatial hashing and object culling—only the blocks within the camera's viewport are actually rendered. The lighting system uses a radial gradient mask to simulate the mech's headlamp piercing the darkness.
